FLOOD '07 du du duuuum...

for those who havent seen the news there has been considerable flooding in missouri. not really comparable to the flood of '93, yet they keep doing that on the news. i want to go and take photos of the river this weekend sometime and post them. hopefully i will.

they said on the news last night i think that a dike had broke north of us, the weather lady added "which is good news for st. louis." i was really shocked. im sure that the people that had to evacuate their homes thought, "well at least this is good for st. louis." because i know that that is what i would be thinking.

but here is whats bothering me, people dont like it flooding which is a given. i mean it ruins homes and makes people have to leave. yet people keep building in flood plains and then building dikes and levies to safe guard that property. dont they know why those are called "flood plains"?? its because the river NEEDS that area to flood periodically. otherwise the water goes other HIGHER places.

back in 1993 the area now known as the "chesterfield commons" or "boones crossing" was like 10-13 feet under water. damaged a lot of businesses and homes. so what did people and developers learn? nothing. there is 50 million dollars more development, and thats not counting the repairs. and they built a huge levee to divert the water somewhere else.

brilliant. where did they come up with that original idea?

now dont get me wrong im not one of those tree hugin' hippies that would give up babies to save a tree, but im just saying that i find areas like that hard to show sympathy to. i mean if i put up a tent in road would people feel sorry for me if i got hit?

i just think that people instead of seeing dollar signs, should look around and see the water marks. they are building on the "sand instead of the rock" if you know what i mean.

You tree huggin' hippie long haired girly boy!!! Just kidding! Two things that never cease to amaze me: the rudeness and stupidity of the human race. It seems quite obvious. Maybe no one told them they were in the flood plain when they bought the house:) Or maybe temporary desire out weighed common sense.

Although there are probably many factors that contribute to a person's decision to continue living in unsafe areas, it seems to me that once my home gets destroyed one time it would be hard for me to stay.
